South Lake Tahoe Release Path

The El Dorado custody page identifies the South Lake Tahoe facility as one of the sheriff's two jail facilities and states that it can house up to 158 inmates. For Alpine County release research, that matters because Alpine has no jail facilities and contracts jail services to El Dorado and Calaveras. A person arrested in Alpine may be taken to the Tahoe-side jail depending on location, availability, court routing, and custody needs.

A South Lake Tahoe release should be confirmed by the custodian that held the person. If the release is recent, the person may still appear in El Dorado Current Inmates or in VINE. Once the person leaves custody, the public current-custody listing may no longer carry the answer. The release record then comes from El Dorado Records, and the case reason usually comes from Alpine Superior Court if the matter began in Alpine.

Confirm a Tahoe Release

Use El Dorado current custody first only when the status may still be active. If a current search does not find the person, use a records request rather than assuming the person was released to the community. The release may have been to court, another county, CDCR, ICE, a hospital, or another agency. Alpine cases are especially prone to split records because the arrest, court file, and jail stay may sit with different offices.

1. Search El Dorado Current Inmates for active custody.
2. Register in California VINE if the person is in custody and a release or transfer alert is needed.
3. Contact South Lake Tahoe Records for the booking/release entry once the person is no longer listed.
4. Ask Alpine Sheriff which jail received custody if the holding facility is uncertain.
5. Request Alpine court records for the bail, dismissal, sentence, probation, or transfer order.

South Lake Tahoe Records

The El Dorado Records page lists the South Lake Tahoe Office Records Unit as a release-record contact point. El Dorado also states that a local CORI report can show El Dorado County Jail booking and release dates for 10 years, arresting agency, and charges, for eligible subject requests with valid identification and payment.

For public release information, ask for the time and manner of release, booking date and time, arresting agency, charges, bail or bond status, holds, and transfer destination. For the court reason, use Alpine Superior Court when the case is an Alpine filing.

Tahoe Records Limits

El Dorado's current-custody source is a present-status tool. It is not documented in the reviewed source text as a 24-hour or 72-hour release archive. For someone who has left South Lake Tahoe custody, the records path is more reliable than repeating current-custody searches. VINE is useful for custody-change notice, but it is a notification system, not the original jail record.

Government Code section 7923.610 supports access to specified public arrest information, including the time and manner of release or current holding location, unless a safety or investigation limit applies. If a booking photo is needed, ask El Dorado which agency holds it and whether it is disclosable. Do not assume a photo remains visible after release.

Tahoe Alpine Record Stack

South Lake Tahoe custody can create a three-part record stack for an Alpine case. The jail record identifies the physical custody event. Alpine Sheriff may identify the arrest, transport, and destination jail. Alpine Superior Court identifies the order or disposition that caused the release. Reading only one layer can give an incomplete answer. A current-custody search may stop showing the person after a release or transfer, while the court file may still show an active case, probation term, warrant recall, or later hearing.

When requesting records, state that the person may have been held at the South Lake Tahoe facility after an Alpine County arrest. Ask El Dorado Records for booking and release dates, arresting agency, charges, release reason, and any transfer destination. Ask Alpine court for minutes, disposition, sentencing, bail order, or warrant recall. If the release was to CDCR, BOP, ICE, or another county, the Tahoe release record becomes the bridge to the next system rather than the last document.

The Tahoe-side facility is also important for timing. Recent releases can disappear from current custody before a court or family contact has a full explanation. VINE alerts can help when registration happened before release, but the official date and manner of release still come from the jail custodian or the court record that authorized the custody change.

Tahoe Request Checklist

For a South Lake Tahoe request, use the person's legal name, date of birth, booking date if known, arresting agency, and any Alpine court case number. Ask for the booking and release record, including release date and time, release reason, charges, bail or bond status, holds, and transfer destination. If the person was moved to another custodian, request the receiving agency name. Then check that system directly instead of treating the Tahoe release as the end of all custody.

If the person is missing from a current-custody search, write that into the request without assuming the outcome. A careful request can say that the person no longer appears in current custody and that confirmation is needed for the time and manner of release or transfer. That wording matches the public-records field identified in Government Code section 7923.610 and keeps the request focused on the custody event.
